Testimonials 🥰

We hope these words give you an idea of how much our passion for physical therapy and pilates shines through to our patients, students, and clients.

  • Restored confidence after a longstanding injury

The teachers are the PTs from the attached physical therapy office, which really gave me confidence in starting to work out after recovery from a longstanding injury. And the teachers are all consistently excellent -- I believe I've taken classes with all but one and I have never had a class that I didn't come out of feeling amazing. The equipment is extensive -- reformers, chairs, spring board/wall, and all sorts of other devices at the ready -- and kept clean and in great shape. 8 reformers in the studio so classes stay small. It's perfect!!

  • Deep understanding of body mechanics

Nicole is one of the best Physical Therapists that I have ever worked with. She has a deep understanding of body mechanics and the ways in which her approach can help patients feel better and return to normal activities. I find Nicole to be a pleasure to be around. She's funny, listens attentively, knows what I'm trying to accomplish to remain active, and has designed therapies that are working to help me gain optimal performance on my road bike.

  • After first visit

Dr Herrera-Set is extremely knowledgeable and very personable. Starting with my first PT appt she has significantly improved my ROM, decreased my pain, and increased my exercise menu. I am very grateful.

  • Clear instructions and guidance

Thank you, Dr. Keiko, for a wonderful first experience with PT. Kiana said "I wish I had started PT earlier!" and really appreciated the clear instructions and guidance. Thanks for letting us take videos as reference so that she can do follow-up exercises at home. We've ordered a neuro ball and will continue with what she learned today.

    Kiana C, October 29, 2022

  • Foot pain and tendon stiffness

  • Follows up until fully recovered

Dr. Alyssa Herrera-Set is such a knowledgeable, compassionate, and patient professional. She's helped my daughter work through her injury with PT sessions, and could tell there was something more going on. Thanks to her advice, we pursued an x-ray to learn my daughter's foot was actually broken! She continues to follow up and share resources to help my daughter through her recovery. I highly recommend Dr. Alyssa for your PT needs, especially if you are a dancer!

  • Sense of security and positivity

Alyssa is a wonderful physical therapist. While extremely knowledgeable, she was kind and welcoming. Her communication was very clear and she provided a sense of security and positivity during the session. She provided much needed practical tools and a plan forward until our next appointment.

  • Physical therapy for dancer

I've spoken to many of her former clients who all had outstanding experiences and suffered from a diverse set of lower body injuries. During our first visit yesterday for my daughter's long-standing ankle dysfunction (she's a dancer) it was clear that she is the person we should've been working with this entire time. She knows how the body is supposed to move and is very good at observing faulty patterns that can contribute to injury. Her initial suggestions were well thought out and helpful. We look forward to working with her.

  • Physical therapy for ballet dancer

I feel so fortunate to have been referred to Dr. Alyssa Herrera-Set for my daughter, a ballet dancer, and also for myself. My daughter has made wonderful progress recovering from a serious knee injury, with Alyssa's professional help, and along the way, she has answered our many questions with thoroughness and concern. Personally, she has been a wonderful resource for learning so much about the body and physical therapy and has generously answered questions relating to my own physical issue, when my doctor's solution did not inspire confidence.

Besides Dr. Herrera-Set's professional expertise, she is very genuine and fun! My daughter loves her sessions with Alyssa!

  • Telehealth physical therapy for sports injury

Alyssa is an incredibly knowledgeable physical therapist. Her office is a place of great positivity and professionalism and it's always a pleasure to visit. Recently I was also able to gain some advice from Alyssa remotely regarding a sports injury. Even without the benefit of face-to-face interaction, she was quickly able to pinpoint the issue and give practical and helpful advice going forward. It's always a great experience working with Alyssa and I wholeheartedly recommend her for help and advice both remotely and face-to-face.

  • Hand and wrist injury from typing

I worked with Dr. Jamie Wong recently, and she is honestly so fantastic! Jamie helped me completely get rid of all the pain I'd been having in my hands/wrists from repetitive motion (typing all day) in just a couple of visits. It's been a few months now since my last visit, and I'm happy to say that my pain is still totally gone thanks to what I learned from Jamie! She helped me with manual therapy during our appointments and taught me great exercises and self-massage to do on my own, which I still use when needed. She also gave me incredibly helpful advice on subtle mistakes I'd been making with my desk setup and how to fix them to make it more ergonomic; those changes have made a huge difference for me. Jamie is also just a delight to be around -- our appointments were always a highlight of my day! Thanks, Jamie!

  • Private pilates lesson

I've been working with Claire for several months on Pilates sessions and it's awesome. I was a beginner, and I am not into sports. The first sessions were about learning the basics and how to use the equipment like a reformer, chair, trapeze table, and core Align. Claire is supportive, dedicated, and a great observer/listener. She focuses on my posture and tailors exercises to my individual needs. Now, I am going there twice a week and I love it. I can see the benefits of Pilates exercises on my body. It improves its flexibility, core strength, posture, and balance. Moreover, the other staff members are friendly and helpful and the facility is clean and in excellent condition. I would definitely recommend Pilates sessions there.

  • Loving pilates classes

I've been there a couple of times and I love it! I've taken a few different classes to see what I like. I tried a mat class, a reformer class, and an equipment class. I wasn't a fan of the mat class because it was a little too slow for me. But I really enjoyed the equipment and reformer class. The instructors are great and really care about their students. The classes are pretty small so the instructors are able to really correct you and make sure you are not hurting yourself!

I would definitely recommend that you try all the classes to see what you like the best!

I highly recommend On the Move. Excellent skilled providers who provide careful assessment and ensure that you are seeing the provider whose expertise best matches your needs. Excellent personal attention and a wide range of equipment to help meet your goals. Always positive and really motivate you to progress. Bonus: online scheduling for appointments!

  • Highly recommend for dancers who want a quick recovery

Jamie is an amazing physical therapist!

I had neck and shoulder pain since February, but I feel so much better and quickly recovering after her treatment plan!! I am a dancer and highly recommend that dancers get her treatment if they need help for any of their physical problems! She is very knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate.

  • Shoulder tendinitis

Jamie Wong is a wonderful PT. She was great with me during my 1st session/evaluation. I've been dealing with a shoulder tendinitis injury and she was able to give me a lot of tips on how to strengthen, stretch and self-massage the area for relief and healing. I appreciate how attentive, knowledgeable, and kind she was. Would definitely recommend her to others. The studio is very nice and welcoming as well. Can't wait to come back.

  • Seeking institute of physical art functional manual therapist

I know On the Move Physical Therapy because of Jamie Wong at her previous job in Palo Alto. I have followed Jamie since she left that job even though that is a LOT further from where I live but still worth it! The reason I like to work with Jamie is that she is an IPA ( Institute of Physical Art) trained Functional Manual Therapist. In order to hold the title CFMT requires serious series of continuing education courses and the therapist has to pass the very difficult certification exam. Jamie is very knowledgeable and uses a Holistic approach to find the causes of the pain and also uses advanced manual techniques, neuromuscular education, and corrective exercises to address my issues.

My neck pain has been bothering me for 2+ years and she layers out each causes and show me how to take care of myself including corrective exercises, resetting my shoulder blades, body mechanic, loading strategies, and core first strategies. Those tips help me to be able to do my job and recreational activities w/o neck discomfort.

She individualizes her treatment each visit based on what I need or my current condition and she progresses me appropriately. She walks me through step by step what she sees/feels in my body and how she addresses the issues with her reasoning step by step clearly in order to help me understand what's going on in my body or my movement. She uses her heart to treat her patient and makes sure I get the most out of each visit. I am also a therapist and I would say I still learn a lot from her each visit.

Jamie is definitely one of the BEST PTs in the bay area. Highly recommended!!

  • Worth the commute

My daughter has been working with Alyssa for several months now for a ballet injury, and we are more than happy/grateful we found her. She specializes in working with dancers (and gymnasts) and knows exactly what works best for their specific needs. My 17-year-old daughter has been making progress weekly and loves working with Alyssa. The location of On the Move Physical Therapy is in Belmont and is a long drive for us, but definitely worth it!

    Nancy S, Cupertino, October 8, 2019

  • Costochondritis

I travel to the Bay Area regularly and whenever I am in town, I try to take classes at OTM. Alyssa is an excellent teacher. I am amazed at how much body awareness she has of herself and of others. She can also communicate clearly and effectively when it comes to adjustments to the movements she's leading.

She is also a talented physical therapist. Earlier this year, I had the misfortune of developing costochondritis. It was terribly painful and my recovery was in Month 3 when I saw Alyssa. She did some work that significantly relieved the pain and also suggested some practices that I could take home. It was the only thing (besides pain meds) that actually helped. Thank you.

  • Dance rehabilitation

Alyssa is by far one of the best physical therapists I have ever met. She is not only extremely knowledgeable and able to answer any question no matter how small, but an incredibly kind human being. Especially as a dancer recovering from an injury, she has been so supportive to help me get back on my feet as soon as possible!

Her studio is also gorgeous, and an amazing space for all things rehabilitation and strengthening.

    Nicole S, Cupertino, September 24, 2019

  • Gymnastics injury

I can't say enough good things about Alyssa at On the Move. My daughter has seen her for countless gymnastics injuries. Alyssa is so knowledgeable about gymnastics and has analyzed my daughter's movements and identified adjustments that she can make to reduce pain and prevent injury. She has also told me when I need to take my daughter for an MRI or other scan because she has suspected a more serious issue, and she has never been wrong. Alyssa understands athletes and how important it is to them to return to full activity as quickly as possible, and she does everything possible to help achieve this goal.

    Kate S, Belmont, September 23, 2019

  • Help with posture

Alyssa is simply the best. Incredibly knowledgeable and most importantly, cares about your well-being. She's helped me fix many of my ailments due to poor posture. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed.

  • Daily pain - learning to move again

On the Move PT has made a significant difference in my life! Years ago I found myself in daily pain and a vicious cycle of not being able to exercise or even walk very far. A recommendation from an osteopath was to find "someone who can teach you Pilates for core strength and who has deep understanding and experience with how the human body moves and works." Through an interesting set of connections, I found Alyssa at On The Move and began my journey of recovery. From the beginning, I could tell that I had found what the Osteopath recommended with Alyssa's extensive education, knowledge, insight, and intuition into the complicated biomechanics of the human body not to mention the emotional factors that have to be overcome when someone has been suffering for so long. Working one-on-one she noticed so many details of the way my body was moving and what she could do to try to alleviate my pain while strengthening my body. Her ability to motivate me to try things that I wouldn't have thought I could do, her willingness to listen to the saga of my personal complaints, and her cheerful disposition made such a difference. One day early on, I woke up in so much pain from moving a piece of furniture that I called to tell her that I wouldn't be able to make it to my appointment. She very calmly and encouragingly advised that some movement was better than none and offered that I could come in for 15 minutes and she wouldn't charge me. I ended up staying the whole session and felt so much better than I knew then that the pilates practice would become part of my life every day. I can't thank her enough for working with me and helping me go from being hopeless that I would ever regain my strength to being more active and better connected to how my body works.

  • D1 college soccer player

My son is a D1 college soccer player who saw Alyssa at On the Move Physical Therapy for a back injury he sustained while playing during the off-season. She was professional, kind, and creative in her care for his sports injury. After a thorough evaluation, she was able to give him many exercises and suggestions that ultimately helped him get back on the field. We were all extremely grateful. Alyssa understands competitive athletes and the demands they place on their bodies. What stood out for us was the way in which she individualized her care to his specific body movements. We now regularly seek her expertise when sidelined.

  • Dance injury

I have had such an amazing experience with Alyssa and her practice. I had countless injuries over the years and Alyssa not only got me back to dancing quickly but gave me so many tools to keep my body healthy moving forward. Thank you so much for everything!

  • Groove Fit dance at elementary school

I've known Alyssa for many years since she delivered a Groove Fit dance class at the local school/community center for 9 years and Sandpiper School PTA also engages her to deliver dance to their students during the school day. She's invested in her local community, devoted to making a difference and she'll go the extra mile for clients, above and beyond what you might expect! Alyssa cares. You see it in everything she does. She is highly regarded in her community, a real listener, highly principled, steadfast, and loyal. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more trustworthy pair of hands for your injured body!

  • Hockey and figure skater injuries

Both of my kids-who are athletes- and I have been going to On The Move for the past couple of years. I have been treated for bursitis of the hip and a hamstring strain. My daughter, a figure skater, started seeing Alyssa to gain flexibility and strength for her sport. Alyssa started a stretching and pilates class for the creative athlete. My son, a competitive hockey player, has seen Jamie Wong for a hamstring injury. Both Alyssa and Jamie are intuitive therapists, and the facilities are top-notch. I highly recommend On The Move for both physical therapy and a variety of classes they offer to adults and the youth community.

  • Exercise for beginners

We have been coming here for Pilates for about 6 months now with Dr. Keiko and cannot recommend it enough! The instructors here are all physical therapists and unlike many other Pilates studios in the area, the focus here is on form, stretching, and strengthening safely as opposed to just working out as hard as possible for an hour.

As total exercise beginners with previous injuries, this has been the most incredible way to start getting in shape.

    Loren H, San Francisco, Aug 30, 2019

  • ACL repair rehabilitation

I went to them after my first ACL surgery didn't go well and my knee would straighten up. I was impressed by the care they take for each patient in making sure they are recovering soon and gaining strength. I started off with Keiko where she did a lot of hands-on therapy that would make my knee feel better for some time after the session. Unfortunately, since my ACL wasn't put in properly the first time and my knee would go back to being bent, she recommended I see a doctor to ensure my ACL is good. Turns out my ACL was bad and had to get the surgery done again. I came back here after my second surgery and started working with Alyssa. She too is really nice and motivates you even with slight improvements in form, and strength. Post my second ACL surgery, Alyssa ensured that I was doing the right kind of exercises to help me get back to biking soon.

An additional benefit is they have a Pilates studio as well, so sometimes as part of PT, you'll be doing some strengthening on the Pilates machines. It'll pain but it definitely helps in strengthening. I'd recommend anyone seeking a good PT in the peninsula area to try them out. Thank you to Keiko and Alyssa for helping me out with my recovery.

  • I can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Alyssa! She has all of the perfect qualities that make an exceptional physical therapist: she's a wonderful listener, extremely knowledgeable, highly professional and incredibly passionate. She always has the best interest of her patients in mind and she makes sure that her treatment aligns with your goals.

  • Think outside the box

Dr. Alyssa's approach is very hands-on and her attention to detail is superb. She assesses the body as a whole and has great insight as to what the source of pain/limitations are and how to best address them. She spends the entire session with you, and thinks outside the box, coming up with unique and creative ways to tailor physical therapy to your needs. She's excellent at interacting with every patient (including teenage girls, which is hard to do!) and treats each one of her clients as family. Her background in gymnastics and dance also makes her especially skilled and knowledgeable at working with gymnasts and dancers.

As someone who has interacted with many physical therapists, I can truly say that Dr. Alyssa is one of a kind. She's empathetic, thoughtful, and an overall genuine and very fun individual to spend time with. Highly recommend!

  • Physical therapist with spinal cord injury

This place is great. And you can take it from me because I am a physical therapist myself! Long story but I recently had surgery to remove a herniated disc that was compressing my spinal cord. Since then I have been experiencing weakness and abnormal muscle tone throughout my entire body. I've been working with Jamie since leaving acute rehab and she really knows her stuff! Her skill set and experience have been truly effective in helping my recovery. I am now walking with better mechanics and moving all limbs more smoothly thanks to Jamie.

Jamie's demeanor is also super encouraging. She's always cheerful and when you're recovering from something as debilitating as a spinal cord injury, it helps greatly to have someone like that overseeing your rehab.

As for the clinic itself, it's a great space. Clean, convenient parking, enough space for gait training or a dance class, and snacks and coffee in the waiting room! Really pleased with my experience at On the Move. Thanks, guys!!

  • Chronic shoulder problem

Alyssa Is just such a terrific physical therapist. She is patient, attentive, knowledgeable, competent, and effective. She has a kind and professional feel to her that made me feel like I was in secure hands. I have already learned so much about a chronic shoulder problem that has been plaguing me for years and worsened in the last six months. I really wish I had sought help for this sooner based on how much I've already learned in a 60-minute appointment with her.

  • Back and foot pain

I have been seeing Jamie for the last couple of months for back and foot pain. And she is the best physical therapist I have ever been to! Jamie's hands-on treatments and take-home exercises really took care of my pain quickly. I would highly recommend Jamie, she is very kind, compassionate, and caring! I can't say enough positive things about Jamie!

I have been seeing Jamie for the past 2 months here for lower back pain from a dance injury. I am extremely happy with her treatments and the results I am getting so far. Before we started, I was worried a lot about being re-injured by my PT since there are so many cases out there. Jamie is so nice and gentle with you, you never feel you are pushed by anyone.

    Sheryl W, Menlo Park, July 10, 2018

  • Exercises start working right away

She's friendly, patient, and listens to what you say. Her personality makes you feel comfortable when working with her. She taught me how to sit/drive/sleep to relax my lower back more from our first appointment. The exercises she taught me during our first appointment started working right away. I can see a huge improvement just after 2 weeks of doing these.

She's also very knowledgeable about the human body and always gives you great answers to any questions you may have. She is strong in manual therapy which helps a lot in relieving the pain. I highly recommend Jamie to anyone who wants to try PT but is a little afraid to do so!

    Jinyun Z, Redwood City, July 4, 2018

  • Dance injuries

My daughter is training in classical ballet and has often sustained injuries with many of them due to activities outside of the ballet studio. She recently started having pain in the outside of her knee, was unable to dance, and has her ballet recital in 2 weeks! Yikes! Alyssa was recommended by several of the ballet moms from my daughter's school because of her expertise in dance-related injuries. She was able to schedule an appointment and start working on my daughter's injury immediately. She is very thorough in her assessment, knowledgeable, and extremely caring. Her care does not just focus on the injured area but also on strengthening and prevention. My daughter's condition improved significantly in a short amount of time and will be able to perform this Saturday! Thank you, Alyssa! She will also be attending her Monday pilates classes for strengthening, flexibility, and prevention.

  • Not a gymnast/dancer so wasn't sure if this was the right place

I started seeing Alyssa in December for low back pain from a degenerated disc based on other positive Yelp reviews. They were all spot on! She is an incredibly caring, knowledgeable, and effective PT. I was not sure if she would be the right PT for me since I am not a dancer or gymnast but I quickly realized she has so much expertise in helping people overcome pain and injury that it did not matter in the least. With her kind, gentle and thorough manner, her wonderfully professional and clean office and equipment, and her lovely sense of humor each visit is a pleasure and a highlight of the week. Alyssa also connects the mind-body aspect of therapy and pain management which is key. I have slowly started to feel better and that is in large part to working with Alyssa. If I could give her more than 5 stars I would - thanks, Alyssa!! :)

    Sonya S, Schenectady, March 25, 2018

  • Young competitive dancer

Alyssa is an expert physical therapist who started to work with my daughter when she was experiencing pain in competitive dance. Alyssa is knowledgeable, passionate and engages the young person well. My daughter has a great deal of trust in her - and looks forward to her sessions. Alyssa is helping her gain strength and learn her body, which is important for long-term health. All in all, Alyssa is excellent.

    Bonnie G, Belmont, March 11, 2018

  • Professional dancer - clinic is clean

As a professional dancer, I highly recommend Alyssa to any dancer or athlete. Her knowledge of dance and gymnastics is impeccable. She has treated all my injuries in the last two years and has done an amazing job of healing the areas as well as strengthening them. Alyssa works well with children and is also a great Pilates teacher. What I like most about her is that she is very personable. Alyssa makes sure she takes care of you in the best way possible. The clinic itself is very clean, welcoming, and filled with top-notch equipment for the patients. Lots of parking and just off the 101 freeway!

    Candy T, Burlingame, September 29, 2017

  • Gymnast

As a gymnast, seeing a physical therapist who understands the terminology of gymnastics is key. Having been to multiple other physical therapists before her, she was definitely different. I would communicate with her from a gymnast's perspective, and she would completely understand my situation (which is not very common). She takes her time to go over each exercise where she would make it challenging if it easy or change it if it painful. I found it easy to talk to her about anything - injuries, physical therapy, school, sports, etc. Alyssa is a qualified and knowledgeable PT who can meet the demands of her patient. I would recommend her to anyone, but especially those who are involved in gymnastics and dance. I also love how she displayed the medical/ rehab supplies that people can purchase from her instead of going out to buy some from other places.

  • 11 year old and mom, would give 10 stars

I've been seeing Alyssa for several years now, for private and semi-private Pilates, as well as physical therapy for my knee and back. My 11 yo son has also seen her for rehab following a broken leg. If Yelp went to 10 stars, I would give her 10. Alyssa is the consummate professional, yet warm, friendly, and flexible. She is extremely good with kids as well as adults, and our overall health has improved as a result. The studio is immaculate, and parking is never a problem. Alyssa is constantly striving to improve her clients' experience by keeping up to date with the latest techniques and practices. If she has an open slot, take it!

    Thank you, Alyssa, for everything!

  • 9 years of injury prevention for ballet

I have been going to Alyssa for 9 years now and she has successfully conquered every injury I've thrown at her. Not only is she a fantastic physical therapist, she has been like a mother to me who I trust with every aspect of my life. She has great values that have led her to start several special needs programs, and I would not be focusing my life on working in this field if it hadn't been for her. My favorite part of going to her has been the way she incorporates my skills as a ballerina to help me grow stronger, and she makes each exercise challenging in a way that I feel that she truly cares about my health. You will never meet someone more devoted to helping you, both physically and mentally, and I believe you will look forward to seeing her every week as I do.

    Holly K, Belmont, September 15, 2017

  • Expert in her field

Alyssa is truly an expert in her field. My daughter loves going to see her because of how great she feels after a session. She's well-organized, flexible, and knowledgeable. Thank you, Alyssa!

  • From a pediatrician whose daughter is a gymnast and dancer

As a pediatrician, I highly recommend Alyssa for all ages, especially for children involved in demanding sports as so many seem to be these days. My daughter worked with Alyssa after a major ankle injury. She is excellent - kind, knowledgeable, skilled with children, and understands the unique demands of various sports, especially gymnastics and dance. She gave our daughter a plan of exercises that was personalized and manageable, and organized her rehab, guiding us through the stages of safely resuming her sport. Alyssa is warm and friendly, and her space is beautiful with sophisticated, cutting-edge equipment. Through thoughtful rehab from her injury, my daughter ultimately learned invaluable information about proper technique, strengthening, and protecting herself in the future.

  • ACL tear, kids take dance fitness class at On The Move

After I tore my ACL & had surgery to repair it, Alyssa was my physical therapist. I can not say enough wonderful things about her approach, her knowledge of what was happening in my body (even when I couldn't even describe it), how kind she is & how she got me back up & running quickly & safely. Alyssa has also been an amazing dance teacher for both of my kids (especially the one who absolutely REFUSED to go the first day & now can not wait to get to her class!). They adore her & love dance because of her class.

  • Great with kids

Alyssa Herrera-Set, DPT, SCS, PMA-CPT, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Board Certified Sports Clinical Specialist, and PMA Certified Pilates Teacher has been so great for our Son over the years. He actually feels like a gymnast now and tells people he likes gymnastics as much as soccer. Who would have thought. He was born with low muscle tone and cognitive challenges and now he is achieving things we didn't know would be possible. Alyssa is so patient and talented. She is great with kids of all ages. If you want your child to learn self-confidence in addition to a great sport, Alyssa is just what you need.

  • Motivates children

Alyssa is amazing! She has motivated my non-exercise-loving children when they wanted to sit out during a class! Somehow she managed to even get one of them to love dance so much that she's now taking a hip-hop dance class! We are starting our 4th year of working with her and we love it!!!

  • Elite gymnast

Love, love, the work that Alyssa has done with my daughter, Madelyn Williams, a Junior International Elite Gymnast. Alyssa is very professional & knowledgeable, she treats the injury and works on prevention as well. She really gets to know her patients personally and uses that insight to positively impact the mental aspect of an athlete. On the Move Physical Therapy is a gem. Thank you, Alyssa!

  • ACL rehab

My daughter continues to enjoy her time with Alyssa and it shows. Her rehab from ACL repair is way ahead of schedule because of what she learns and does in her workouts and physical therapy with Alyssa.

  • Review from a physical therapist

Alyssa separates herself from the rest of the physical therapists. She will not treat you like another number and provide the typical cookie-cutter approach that we see in these high-volume factory clinics. Her ability to communicate effectively while delivering amazing movement education with great soft tissue skills (cupping, myofascial release, etc.) is a great asset to her practice. As a physical therapist myself, I hold other PTs to a higher standard and feel absolutely comfortable sending her any of my clients because of the way she carries herself professionally. Secondly, I can refer her with extreme confidence due to the fact that she is a Sports Certified Specialist (SCS), which is not easy to obtain nowadays! I personally do not know of ANY other PTs that specialize in dance, gymnastics, AND pilates. Alyssa is one of a kind and anyone that is hesitant about seeing physical therapy needs to see Alyssa if you want to move and feel better!

  • Back pain

I've been seeing Alyssa for two years with back and general joint pain and she's helped me so much! Her treatments are one of the only things I've found that helps with the pain. She's also super kind and an easy person to get along with. I've had such a great experience with her and would definitely recommend her to anyone needing PT.

  • Level 10 gymnast

My daughter is a level 10 gymnast who has worked with Alyssa this past season. Alyssa is unique among physical therapists in the way she approaches caring for her patients. Instead of relying on standard physical therapy exercises and going through the motion, literally, she tailors each session to determine the essence of the problem. She watches and studies each exercise that my daughter does with the utmost attention. In doing so, she was able to figure out that my daughter has some habits that compromise the outside of her ankle and is working with her to visually and physically address this issue. We really appreciate how much thought she puts into the care of her patients. She is always thinking outside the box to come up with possible remedies. When my daughter said that her ankle hurts in the morning, Alyssa recommended compression socks with the hope that this would alleviate some of the pain. It actually helped. She is a consummate professional with a wonderful bedside manner. With all of the physical therapists we have seen, we have seen the gamut, and Alyssa is the best. We recommend her without reservation.

  • Competitive gymnast - it's worth the drive

My daughter is a competitive gymnast who has had multiple different injuries. We tried many different physical therapists and Alyssa is the best exponentially. (We have tried other PTs who are closer to us, but we always end up going back to Alyssa). She is very knowledgeable about the sport but thinks through each gymnast's problem based on their body mechanics. She figured out that the way my daughter's body habits were incompatible with certain gymnastics moves. Because she knows gymnastics; she was able to help my daughter figure out alternative skills to compete (Thank goodness for optionals!) Alyssa is very good with my daughter and has her own relationship with her, works with her to understand what the problem is and to develop the treatment plan. I also appreciate her contributions to the special needs community and is is a role model for my daughter. Even if her practice is a bit far, I would recommend her to anybody for at least an initial consultation.

  • Understands the biomechanics of dance

Alyssa has been such a find! My daughter seriously injured her leg from dance earlier this year. Alyssa has worked with her weekly- with professionalism and with a wonderful bedside manner. I have the utmost confidence in her judgment, and my daughter's improvement has been impressive. Has been invaluable to have a PT who understands the biomechanics of dance.

  • Arm couldn't straighten, dealing with fear

My daughter was referred to Alyssa by her gymnastics coach after she had a complex fracture of her right arm. Her provider (at Kaiser) didn't offer PT to kids but we had concerns because she had grown weaker, couldn't straighten her arm, and was intensely fearful of using it or even removing her temporary brace. Within 10 minutes Alyssa had her relaxed enough to remove the brace and she was doing exercises that session. Alyssa was focused, yet empathic, in our daughter's treatment and a really important part of getting her healed. She was back doing back handsprings within a month of starting treatment. As a health care provider myself, I am very critical and have nothing but praise for Alyssa. She's great!

  • Chronic neck and shoulder pain

I can't say enough good things about Alyssa and On the Move! She is extremely knowledgeable, intelligent, patient, encouraging, and kind. I have been seeing her for several months now due to issues with chronic pain in my neck and shoulder. I can't believe the progress I have made! I love that she incorporates Pilates into all of our sessions. She has empowered me to feel strong both mentally and physically. If you are looking for a great PT, contact Alyssa.

  • Review from a gymnastics coach

I am a gymnastics coach, and I highly recommend Dr. Herrera-Set to anyone in the gymnastics community. This health professional is a former gymnast and coach, so she has invaluable knowledge of and passion for the sport. My students love her because she speaks their language. She is also the mother of two young gymnasts, so parents appreciate her ability to relate to their experience as well. As a coach, my desire is to see my athletes return to training as quickly and safely as possible. Pain and injury are the lowest points in any athletic pursuit, and gymnasts simply want to get back to doing the sport that they love. With Dr. Herrera-Set's guidance, my athletes feel like they have a plan of action, a path towards painless training, and often return to the sport even stronger and more knowledgeable about their bodies than before. She is always professional, thorough, creative, positive, and caring. Every gymnast needs a trusted PT as a member of their "team", and we are so lucky to have Dr. Herrera-Set in the Bay Area.

  • Hi fellow Yelpers! So I don't normally post Yelp reviews, but I'm a firm believer in giving back to my community as well as praising people for hard work and talent. And when it comes to Alyssa, I can't praise her enough. I am a competitive NCAA division 1 gymnast, and have been competing gymnastics since I was 4 years old. I've had many many injuries over the years from pulled hamstrings to sprained ankles to broken bones. With that said, I always listened to the doctor, except when it came to physical therapy. As a fit person, even when I was injured, I didn't really see the benefits of PT. It wasn't until November of my senior year of high school when I was diagnosed with bilateral spondylolysis (2 stress fractures in my L5 vertebrae), that I decided to actually give it a try, because since this was the second time I fractured this area, the nature of my injury is that it's never really going to heal and in order to continue gymnastics, I had rest for at least 4 months, and start PT to help get the injured area stronger and my pain to a manageable state. After going to Bay Sport PT, when my time with them was coming to an end, one of the physical therapists there recommended that I try On The Move Physio with Alyssa, since she works a lot about dancers and gymnasts, and has more equipment that would be beneficial for my recovery. So I tried it out one day, and it was one of the best decisions in my entire life. Alyssa is one of the most skilled, talented, and knowledgeable physical therapists in her field. Her ability to watch your moves and detect your weak spots, and feel your weak spots through manual therapy, is incredible. Although I primarily see her for my back, I also have a shoulder injury, shin splints, and a foot injury that just comes with the territory of being an almost 20-year-old gymnast. Our bodies weren't made to flip and twist in the air, so naturally I and many others have lots of aches and pains, and Alyssa has helped and continues to help with every single one of them. One of the things Alyssa has taught me is that you can be very strong, but you might not be using the correct muscles that, for me personally, help protect your spine and keep your back stable. Moreover, there's a lot of pounding, jumping, and running in gymnastics, and Alyssa has taught me how to decrease the impact of this pounding on my back, knees, and ankles, and to use the proper muscles to absorb the landing. Beyond gymnastics, Alyssa has helped me become way more flexible and looser than I've ever been, which has not only improved my physical health but my ability to excel in my sport and live a more pleasurable life not being so stiff and tight all the time. Even more so, Alyssa is a kind person who truly cares about each one of her patients. She regularly follows up with me to see how I'm feeling, and even checked in to see how I was doing after my first couple months of college and the beginning of the my first collegiate season/my first meet in nearly 2 years.

  • Multiple gymnastics injuries - college gymnast

Overall, improving everyday activities like sitting, standing, and breathing with the correct muscles, as well as lifting boxes or even putting my clothes on using the proper muscles to decrease the pressure on my back, has all helped improve my overall health, happiness, and everyday life. She has incredible equipment that gets you to utilize muscles in your body that you didn't even know existed, but that make a world of difference in your overall health and recuperation. Because of Alyssa, I was able to help my team win an Ivy League and Conference Championships and break countless school records. I competed on floor in almost every single meet as a freshman, as well as vault, (both of which are very strenuous on the back might I add). I even upgraded my floor routine this year and placed 2nd at our Ivy League Championships. Since I've been back home, I've been seeing Alyssa all summer to further my recovery process because she taught me that you can always be stronger, more flexible, and more agile, and my "recovery process" is never-ending. I will always have back problems for the rest of my life, but as Travis Freeman (first ever blind football player) once said, "Disability does not equal inability...and whatever the circumstances, you don't have to be defined by them." After being diagnosed with this condition, quitting would have been a reasonable, and easier, option for me. But like most things in life, I chose the harder path. And with Alyssa's help, almost two years after being diagnosed with two permanent lower back stress fractures, I actually feel the fittest and most flexible I've ever been, and more importantly, I don't think I've ever loved my sport any more than I do now being able to compete at the NCAA Division I level with an amazing, talented, and hard-working group of teammates, coaches, and other fellow athletes. Without Alyssa's help, none of this would have been possible and I'm forever grateful for everything she has done.

  • I met Alyssa several years ago through the gymnastics community. I've been a patient of hers and have sent students to work with her as well. Alyssa is one of the most knowledgeable and caring PTs I've ever had the privilege of knowing. She also teaches Pilates, an added bonus!

  • Review from a gymnastics coach - you won't be disappointed

Capable of working with anyone, any age, Alyssa has a unique talent for working with gymnasts, dancers, and swimmers- and understanding their mechanics because she was involved in the sport. Any gymnast I've sent her has left feeling relief and also with exercises to improve his/ her ailment. Myself included. I really appreciate Alyssa's availability also. If I have a question she is accessible by email or phone. She works tirelessly to answer questions I / anyone has. their pain and what we can do to prevent it in the future as well as in the now. Alyssa is the type of Doctor who will come back to you a week after you've asked a question or seen her for treatment because she's researched it more and has more answers for you. Her doctor-to-patient relationship is professional and makes you feel like your concerns are of utmost priority to her. I could go on and on but I recommend her above all PTs in the Bay Area. You won't be disappointed.

  • Nothing compares

I have seen many different physical therapists but none compare to Alyssa. Not only is she very compassionate, she puts a lot of thought into diagnosing what is causing the problem. She even traveled to my practice to see how my movements impacted my injury. She understands what is reasonable and unreasonable for a gymnast like me, and creates a game plan that is best for me and at the same time allows me to do what I love.

  • Was hardly able to walk and left a whole new person

Everything about this place is AMAZING!!! I worked with Alyssa she is a miracle worker. I went into therapy hardly able to walk and in severe pain... I left a whole new person (yes I was still experiencing some pain, but with what I am dealing with that is absolutely expected). I can not believe how much better Alyssa was able to make me feel in a 1-hour session. The facility is clean and professional, everyone was kind and welcoming. You can tell she really cares about not only trying to make you feel better but she wants to figure out the REAL PROBLEM AND FIX IT! This is the place to go!!!

  • Severe back pain

I had severe back pain and as a result, could barely walk and was unable to work for several weeks. I was referred to Alyssa by my back doctor at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and from the first visit, I began to improve. Alyssa is a very caring person in addition to being an expert physical therapist. Within a week or so of treatments I began to improve, and over time returned to full activities. I go in once a month for a "tune-up" and continue to be virtually pain-free, nearly two years after the initial incident. The studio has a very calm, relaxing atmosphere that feels like a little oasis from the outside world. It allows you to have complete focus on the treatment. Highly recommend On the Move!

  • Undivided attention for multiple tennis injuries

I originally saw Alyssa for a shoulder issue. Woohoo! The shoulder is fixed! Then I hurt my knee, so Alyssa worked on that. And then she worked on my neck... At this point, I see her regularly and I think of her as a wellness partner. Tennis (and sitting at a desk and aging) causes problems in the neck, knee, back, wrists, elbow, etc. and Alyssa eliminates my pain and restores my range of motion; then we work on strengthening exercises (Pilates) on targeted areas. By the way, if you have a limited range of motion and you do nothing, your range is only going to get narrower over time. I don't want to be all hunched over shuffling with a walker someday!

Alyssa is extremely knowledgeable about the human body and it is why she is so effective at finding and eliminating sources of pain. While working on strengthening exercises, she pays intense attention to posture, position, and which muscles you are using throughout the exercises -- physical trainers are often more concerned with the result (how much weight did you push? how many reps did you do?) than with how you achieved it. Alyssa's method makes sure you are not hurting yourself, that you are strengthening the right muscles, and that you are training your body to use the right muscles (for example, abdominal muscles rather than back.)

Finally, it is well worth mentioning that you get Alyssa's undivided attention for the ENTIRE length of the session. That means you have a licensed physical therapist working with you the entire time, rather than only 20 minutes before being handed off to an assistant. That makes a huge difference in the value of the session.

I highly recommend Alyssa as a physical therapist. Her new location is spacious and beautiful inside, with ample parking.

  • Pulled my back out and she was able to fix it

Alyssa is the best! She really takes the time to locate the problem and fix it. Her office and equipment are first class along with those beautiful hardwood floors! She is very easy to talk to and makes you feel at home. I pulled my back out and she was able to fit me in the next day and fix it. Thank you, Alyssa!

  • Prep for two marathons

I have worked with Alyssa to prep for two half marathons. The first time my shin was so sore I had almost given up on being able to complete the race. Alyssa was able to diagnose the problem, get me up and running in a few weeks and I completed the race injury free.

The second time was a similar situation. Except this time I could not figure out where the pain was coming from. I just knew that it hurt to put weight on my leg... Definitely, not a good place to be a few weeks before a race. Again she worked her magic and got me up and running.

I highly recommend Alyssa and her practice!! I don't know how she does what she does, but she is amazing!! She is great to work with, and very caring. I never write reviews, but I found her on Yelp and wanted to make sure to share the recommendation. She is a great PT and great to work with!!

  • Personalized approach

After going to see a general "one size fits all" type of physical therapy my injury did not improve. If you are looking for a more personalized approach On The Move Physical Therapy is not only professional, knowledgable, and personalized, but everyone there is so sweet and welcoming. I worked with Alyssa and she got back to playing sports in 1 month after a bad back injury when nothing else worked. Alyssa is a wonderful person but is also incredibly intuitive to your needs without having to explain every detail. She will personalize your rehabilitation according to what she thinks is going on. She will watch you through every exercise and make sure you are doing it correctly. If I ever have another injury I will go back here for sure.

  • Osgood schlatter/low back pain - gymnast and mom

Both my daughter and I have seen Alyssa at On the Move Physical Therapy for different reasons but we have both seen the same amazing results. Alyssa is not just caring and a good listener, she is extremely knowledgable about the human body and physical movement. As a former athlete, she truly understands movement and the different ways that the body may become strained. My daughter, a competitive gymnast, saw Alyssa for Osgood Shlatter in both knees. After seeing and working with her, she has been able to rehabilitate and fix the issues that were not just causing pain, but also effecting her competition. Alyssa was able to help her be more conscious about muscle alignment, foot placement and how those items relate to her knees. She also worked with her to strengthen surrounding muscles and it has made an amazing difference.

I recently started seeing Alyssa after a back injury led to 3 herniated lumbar discs, swelling in my SI joint and spinal stenosis. She has been so helpful, caring and kind to work with, and I always leave each session feeling so much better than when I walk in. She has helped tremendously with pain management and working on a plan for rehabilitation. Although I'm not an athlete, working with Alyssa has been the best thing for me because I now have a better understanding of how I have used the wrong muscles during different activities without realizing and how this probably contributed to weakening my back allowing this sort of injury to occur. I am blown away by her knowledge of physical body - every muscle and nerve. This is a woman who LOVES what she does and it shows. I highly recommend Alyssa - she is caring, passionate and thorough, an excellent communicator and excellent at what she does. - Bridgette B, San Mateo, Sept 25, 2014a at On the Move Physical Therapy for different reasons but we have both seen the same amazing results. Alyssa teaches Groove Fit Kids at my son's Elementary School. She brings an incredible amount of talent, enthusiasm, and patience to each class. All of the kids have a great time learning and dancing with Alyssa while getting a lot of exercise.

  • Magical hands, miraculous recovery

Alyssa has magic hands. When I started physical therapy with her for rotator cuff injury, I had a very limited range of motions and a personal requirement of no surgery. Alyssa was very honest with me during her evaluation. She did not promise me any miraculous recovery, and instead gave an honest diagnosis that I may not recover 100% and that we should re-evaluate after 6 sessions or so to see if we should continue with physical therapy or do surgery. But she has magic hands, because my range of motion has increased to almost as good as new, and every day I can feel my arm and shoulder getting stronger. We have moved on from manual therapy to strengthening through Pilates. Alyssa's positive attitude, focus, and energy make these sessions highly effective, more than any personal trainer ever could.

  • Review from a certified massage therapist

I am a certified massage therapist and I have experience working with various physical therapists. I *highly* recommend Alyssa! She stands out above all the rest because of her passion and dedication to her work. She has expert knowledge and talent but also brings such warmth and compassion to the therapy-- and really makes you feel like you are being treated as a whole person, not just an isolated injury. She wants you to understand what is happening in your body and empowers you to improve your own condition.

I love that she has experience working with such a wide variety of clients--from special needs children to professional dancers to the elderly, and continues to give back to the community.

Her studio is accessible and beautiful. I only wish she was closer to me so I could see her more often!

  • Dancer injury rehabilitation

On The Move is a great place to work on strength, flexibility, and rehabilitation. Alyssa (the proprietress) is very open and you can feel her sincerity in wanting to address your individual dancer's/athlete's requirements. I came here because my daughter has stepped up her training in ballet and needed assistance in rehab and strength and flexibility. Alyssa listened and she tailor-crafted a program that would ensure my daughter's overall well-being

The place itself is clean, and a great feeling about it (good feng shui!). Her equipment is always well-prepped and the surroundings are very healthy.

What a great find on the peninsula. I recommend On The Move !!!!!

  • Tennis injury rehabilitation

Alyssa is an outstanding physical therapist and did a great job for me. She is very knowledgeable about the human body, movement, and fitness. As an athlete herself, she also understands the passion her clients have for their sports and is committed to helping them be in the best physical shape possible. With me, she really rolled up her sleeves and figured out how I could feel better, play often and stay healthy. She then executed making sure it all happened, both through the work we did in her office and in the tools she gave me for home use.

One of the many areas where I felt like Alyssa went above and beyond the call of duty is when she came to watch me play tennis. She did this on her own initiative and spent time talking to my tennis coach about my technique. This was one of many steps she took so that she could design a physical training program specifically tailored to me, my sport, and the way I play it.

Bottom line, I give Alyssa the credit for my being in the best physical condition I have been in for a long time.

I also found Alyssa to be a pleasant, caring, and friendly person, so I think that anyone would benefit from her professional approach and enjoy taking advice from her.

  • Clean facility

If you're looking for a personalized Pilates class, I highly recommend working with Alyssa. I took my first lesson with her last week. First, her space is immaculate - very clean, but certainly not sterile - the studio radiates charm and warmth. And all the equipment was brand new - another nice plus. When it got down to the actual lesson, Alyssa was great. She really knows her stuff. I'm a geek and like to dig into the nitty gritty, and Alyssa obliged. She took the time to explain to me why we were doing the exercise, which body parts would benefit, and why. I got a mini anatomy lesson while working up a sweat. At the end of the class, upon my request, she designed a new set of exercises for my abs and legs that I could do at home. I've always been a bit concerned about straining my back doing deadlifts, so Alyssa suggested some alternative exercises that would target those same muscle groups with less stress on my back. Alyssa is patient, informed, and super, super fun to work with. She's so easy to talk to and exudes this happy energy that's infectious. I will definitely be returning for another session and would recommend her to others in a heartbeat.

  • Extensive background and experience with pilates and dance

I highly recommend Alyssa. She really knows her stuff as a physical therapist, but her knowledge is even more enriched by her extensive background and experience with Pilates and dance. Her approach is very holistic and positive. She offered several strengthening exercises (which I prefer over passive temporary treatments like chiropractic or massage) to deal with my issues. She also picked up on my thirst for knowledge and body awareness - she wrote down keywords for me to do my own internet research and enhance my own knowledge. I love that! She is very accessible, thoughtful, and friendly. She even offered to email me my exercises and recommendations. Alyssa is an angel. I walked out of the appointment much more mindful and aware of my body issues and how to address them. My best friend also had an appointment with Alyssa and loved her too! She is highly recommended by us both!

Parking is easy. "On The Move" office was a little tricky to find, but all you need to know is that you use the same entrance as "Paye's Place." (they use the same building) Once inside, just follow the signs to "On The Move."

  • Bay Area dance week free event

Alyssa is amazing and is exactly what I have been searching for. I am a dancer and was looking for more than temporary relief with medications, ice, and heat. She clearly understood the overall needs and body mechanics of an athlete, dancer, mover, etc., and gave me specific exercises and explanations of what I needed to work on to even out both sides of my body. The fitness assessment really helped my awareness of what I was doing to compensate for my injuries. This appointment was made possible by Bay Area Dance Week and I will most definitely be back as soon as I can. I highly recommend Alyssa Herrera-Set. Thank you so much!

Alyssa worked with my daughter for 3 weeks on a sprained ankle. She provided wonderful service and care. My daughter really enjoyed Alyssa's positive outlook and attitude. A basketball and soccer player who runs track as well, my daughter was very anxious to get back on the court/field/track. Thanks to On the Move she is back up and running. Highly recommend!

My daughter (age 8) has been taking the Groove Fit classes led by Alyssa over the last 2 years. Alyssa is a fantastic instructor. The kids learn the proper way to warm up, cool down, etc. Alyssa's background in physical therapy is a definite plus! The choreography is also wonderful..it's amazing how much the kids learn in a short period of time! And most importantly, they have a ton of fun. My daughter loves the class. I highly recommend it!

  • Dancer conditioning workshop

I found Alyssa at a dancer conditioning workshop awhile ago. Her exercises were pretty intense. They definitely made an impression. So, when I got injured I looked for her online. I'm so glad I was able to find her. As a dancer, it's nice to have a physical therapist who knows about dance. She gave me exercises that were really specific for my hip and foot pain. I've been to two other physical therapy clinics and they were great, but Alyssa is special. The other PTs kept doing exercises that were too easy. Plus, it helps that she's super nice.

  • Very modern technology

My friend recommended this place after looking through Yelp. I have pain that persists at very inconvenient times. I have been to several therapy places before this one but none of them have worked so far. The therapist Alyssa is very kind and listens well to what you say. She will create a program that works with your pain and will alter it whenever necessary. When you walk in the place is very welcoming too. Alyssa is very modern with her technology. It is really easy to just email her to ask questions or to give advice. She uses an Ipad and takes pictures and videos for her and your future reference.

I found this place through Yelp and it was recommended. My daughter has knee problems and we tried several therapists already without any improvement. The website is very clean and easy to make appointments. You will get a confirmation in your inbox so you do not have to forget the appointment. Also, you will get a reminder too, which helps us a lot. Coming for the first time in the office, it was a little tricky to find, but once there it was easy. The signs are there. The place looks very inviting and clean. Alyssa, the owner, is very nice. My daughter likes her better than all the other therapists she had. She made my daughter very comfortable. The difference between the other therapists we had and Alyssa is that she tried many things and different things that other therapists not have done before. She pays a lot of attention to what hurts and what works and she definitely knows what she is doing. This gave us hope that her knees might get better one day. Instead of the routine exercises my daughter got from all the other places, she does more and has different strategies and we discovered that it might have something to do with stretches, which she didn't have to do before. Alyssa also uses modern technology. She records the exercises and you receive them in your inbox, so you won't forget them. That is a great feature, knowing that my daughter forgets her exercises and can always look back on how to do it. After 4 visits, my daughter told me that she feels improvement! It doesn't hurt as much and as many times as before! Definitely recommended!
